Don't expect a pedestrian zone or something similar in Coober Pedy. You will have to walk around on dusty unpaved roads, some of which have shops or hotels. The town is not  a tidy tourist destination, but a genuine mining town. The local shops mostly specialize on Opals, but there are also some good shops with Aboriginal art, somewhat more authentic than in Alice Springs.
