The Fitzroy River reaches the sea at King Sound south of Derby. In the dry season, the river almost dries out, being reduced to a series of waterholes above ground. Here crossing the Savannah Way to the south, it crosses the Great Northern Highway to NT at Fitzroy Crossing.
