Eungella National Park is - to our knowledge - the only place in Australia where you have a very good chance to see one of Australias strangest animals - the platypus. Platypus and echidna are the only surviving species of the Monotremata family, the most ancient mammals, still egg-laying, but nurturing their offspring with milk glands. The platypus looks roughly like a cross between a beaver and a duck. The first biologists to receive stuffed ones believed that a practical joke was played on them, so incredible it looked to them.
Near the ranger station, an observing platform at the river allows you to observe the platypus in the dusk. You might see some turtles, too.
