Most tourists, in a hurry, follow the Stuart Highway north from Port Augusta to the Northern Territory. They miss one of the most fascinating landscapes of Australia, Flinders Ranges. This area, protected by a National Park, contains South Australia's highest mountains (St Marys Peak, 1170 m) and a giant natural amphitheatre, Wilpena Pound, shown above. Spend the extra time and visit Wilpena Pound and the strange she-oak tree forests of the Flinders Ranges!
