A large part of the east coast of Fraser Island is a long sand beach, the "75 Miles Beach". Due to currents and sharks, it is deemed too dangerous to bathe. Actually, it is used as highway for 4WD cars and buses, and even as a runway for light planes. 2WD cars are not allowed on the island, as there are no paved roads - the result is that many tourists rent a 4WD car which they have no experience with, getting stuck and endangering themselves when encountering one of the massive 4WD buses.
Fraser Island is usually entered either via Kingfisher Bay (K) in the west or Hook Point (HP) in the south. Near the middle of the 75 Miles Beach is the main park center, Happy Valley (HV).
