The mountain range of the Grampians rises suddenly from the surrounding plains, with the highest point being Mt. William at 1167m above sea level. The range consists of sandstone and is mostly covered by forest. It is protected by the Grampians National Park and famous for its many beautiful walks. Actually, in January 2006 the central part of the park was hit by bushfires, but by now, most areas are already accessible again - Australian forests are adapted to fire and react with rapid revegetation.
