Macquaire Harbour itself is quite protected from the western gales, but to get to the ocean, fishing boats have to enter the narrow channel of Hells Gates. Even on quiet days, quite a challenge. Experience it on a tour boat or drive out to the State Forest on Macquaire Heads Road.
