Salamanca Place, a row of early 19th century warehouses in the vicinity of the harbour, was not named so because it is especially spanish-looking, but to commemorate the Battle of Salamanca in the Napoleonic Wars. Misused as a parking lot during weekdays, it becomes a lively market on Saturdays. A 1990s addition is Salamanca Square, a refurbished former backyard, now a small pedestrian zone.
