The "Sir Hubert Wilkins", a research vessel named after a famous Australian polar explorer, points to the fact that Hobart is the main base for Australian South Polar sea and  Antarctica research activity. Australia has claimed a large slice of Antarctica, the Australian Antarctic Territory, but as the other nations bound by the Antarctic Treaty, it only conducts scientific research there. Btw, the seemingly unclaimed slice on the Antarctica map, between the Chilean and New Zealand ones, is the renowned Grand Duchy of Westarctica!
