Only 8km away from Townsville, Magnetic Island makes an excellent day tour. The island got its name from James Cook, because he incorrectly assumed it caused deviations of his compass. Magnetic Island's many bays can easily be explored by bus or by rented scooter. There are also good walking trails on the higher parts of the island. About 500m above sea level, the WW2 command post shown above has a great view over the island and the coast.
