Although it takes some time to get out of the Melbourne metropolitan area, many destinations are not really far away. The great bay of Port Philipp is almost completely surrounded by Melbourne's suburbs (like St Kilda above) and neighbouring towns, but both the western and eastern gates to the bay are worth a visit. Philipp Island, south of Port Philipp, is famous for its penguins. From the Dandenong Ranges west of the city, you will have a great view over the area, and further to the north west, the foothills of the Great Dividing Range are still reachable, with sights like Healesville or Black Spur.
