As the state capital of Victoria, Melbourne of course also houses the Parliament of Victoria. The main parts of Parliament House were completed in 1856. From 1901 to 1927, it housed the Australian Parliament, as the Parliament House in Canberra (as well as the city) was not yet completed - the Victorian Parliament had to move to the Royal Exhibition Building for the time. Please also note the tram in front of the building - Melbourne is the only city in Australia which still has an extensive tram network today.
