The Yarra River flows through Melbourne in east-west direction, flowing into Port Philipp Bay west of Port Melbourne. It is not a large river and mostly used for recreation. The Yarra Promenade / Southbank Promenade on its south bank in the downtown area is a nice walk with several cafés and good views of the city. In the suburbs, the river flows through a chain of parks linked by bike trails.
