Although Byron Bay these days is overrun by tourists, it is much better than the Gold Coast right over the border in Queensland - no beachside skyscrapers at all. Parking is a bit difficult, though. The beach is excellent, and there are many good restaurants and small shops. The lighthouse on top of Cape Byron (the wooded peninsula in the center above) is a must for tourists.
