The area west of Canberra is hilly, extending up to the Australian Alps and Kosciuszko National Park. The cockatoos shown above were photographed in that area, but are a common sight in all of Australia. They are regarded as a pest by farmers and are regularly killed by professional hunters. Actually, catching these birds alive and selling them to bird lovers abroad could earn quite some money, but it is a matter of principle to the Australian government that no native animals may be exported without a special permit which is rarely given.
