Mt Warning view from Murwillumbah

Not really far from the Pacific coast of NSW, on the Pacific Hwy but recently bypassed by a new highway, lies Murwillumbah (M), with  10'000 inhabitants the largest town of the Tweed River Valley. Most travellers staying at the coast, in towns like Tweed Heads (T), Coolangatta or Gold Coast in Queensland, ignore it, but they miss an area of incredible beauty. The Tweed River Valley is actually the caldera of a huge ancient volcano, with steep mountains and cliffs surrounding the remains of the core of the vulcano, Mount Warning (W), here seen from the terrace of the beautiful YHA in Murwillumbah.

Mount Warning and the crater walls are largely protected by national parks like Springbrook NP, Lamington NP (both in Queensland) and Border Ranges NP, Nightcap NP and Mount Jerusalem NP in NSW.
