Pebbly Beach is surrounded by deep Eucalypt forests. On the way through that forest from the sandy main beach to the "real" Pebbly beach, we spotted a large goanna sitting lazily in the sun.

Goanna is the local name of the various Australian monitor lizards of the genus Varanus. There are around 20 species of goanna, 15 of which occur only in Australia. Goannas are a varied group of carnivorous reptiles that range greatly in size and fill several ecological niches. The Goanna features prominently in Aboriginal mythology, as well as in Australian folklore. It formed an important part the diet of many Aboriginal peoples.
