Rottnest Island was named by the Dutch captain Willem de Vlaming for its somewhat rat like small kangaroos, the Quokka (a "rats nest"). On the mainland, the Quokka is very rare, threatened by cats and foxes, but on Rottnest Island it is common. There is a hopefully false rumour that Perth youths used to play football with these peaceful animals.
