If you want to get away from it all, Strahan on the west coast of Tasmania might be a good place. The town lives off nature in a number of ways - timber, fishing and tourism all depend on the unspoilt Tasmanian nature. On a boat tour in the giant bay of Maquaire Harbour, you will see Gordon River with its ancient forests, and Sarah Island, a former convict settlement (please check out this wonderful Wikipedia note on the island ;-) . The history and nature of the area are documented in the strange looking but excellent visitor centre near the harbour, shown above.
