The huge Tasman Bridge over the Derwent River connects the centre of Hobart with its eastern suburbs and the east coast of Tasmania. Built in 1960, it became famous in 1975 by the collision of the freighter "Lake Illawara" with one of its pylons, which destroyed a large part of the bridge, killed several persons and severed Hobart from its eastern suburbs. Until it was rebuilt two years later, all traffic had to use ferries or make long detours.
