The Tasman Peninsula is not connected directly to the mainland, but via another peninsula, the Forestier Peninsula. Eaglehawk Neck, the isthmus between Tasman and Forestier Peninsula, is very narrow, about 150m of low laying land. In the times of Port Arthur prison, a chain of men and dogs guarded the isthmus, creating an additional level of security for the prison. The image above was taken from Forestier Peninsula, showing Eaglehawk Neck and the rugged eastern coastline of Tasman Peninsula up to "The Lanterns", several cliff rocks at Cape Hauy.
