Kakadu NP is Aboriginal land, both by history and by law - it is owned by Aboriginal land councils, but leased to the state. There are many sites with Aboriginal art, some of them closed to tourists, and some of them open to visitors. Ubirr in the northern part of Kakadu NP is the most famous and largest one.

An aboriginal painting at Ubirr, showing a long necked turtle, a species found in the area also today.
