State parks are often overlooked by the traveller in a hurry, but sometimes it pays to have a look. Cathedral Range State Park lies south of Lake Eildon, but is quite reachable from Melbourne. Although it is not really any more part of the Australian Alps, it is quite steep in some parts. Be prepared for a bit of climbing!
