The coastline of this area is also called "Shipwreck Coast". Rugged and with many steep cliffs, it has claimed more than 50 major ships and thousands of lives. The two most famous of them are the clipper "Loch Ard", sunk at what now is called Loch Ard Gorge with its highly eroded cliffs and rocks shown above, and the Mahogany Ship at Warrnambool, at the end of the Great Ocean Road. The latter is particularly fascinating as it might be the wreck of a Portugese or even Chinese ship of the 15th or early 16th century, making it one of the earliest explorers of Australia. Unluckily, today no remains of the ship are known as the dunes in the area have shifted much since the wreck was reportedly first discovered, in the first half of the 19th century.
