Highway 1, called "Brand Highway" from Perth to Geraldtown, is the only connection to the coastal north west of West Australia. North of Perth, it runs about 25 km inland, through landscapes dominated by cattle farming. Shallow lakes in the area are falling dry these days due to the drought. If you stop on the roadside, you may find some of Western Australias endemic wildflowers, like the Kangaroo Paw.
