Reminding the traveller of the Menhirs of the Bretagne in France, the more than 2 m high limestone pillars in the Pinnacle Desert are a wonder of nature. They were created by subterraean erosion, replacing most of a limestone layer with quarzite sand; the remaining columns now form the Pinnacles. Since the 1960s, the area is protected by Nambung National Park.
