Rottnest is a small island located 19 km off the coast, west of Fremantle. It is no national park, but strictly managed by the Rottnest Island Authority. In the past it has been used as a prison for local Aborigines, and later as a military camp. Today, it is a popular day trip destination, with many beaches, great diving and open ranges. The lighthouse above is the Wadjemup Lighthouse built in 1849 by Aboriginal convicts. As the island is too large discover it by walking, either use the Bayseekers bus, or take a bike! Unluckily, the ferry from Fremantle is quite expensive, more than AUS$ 50 per adult.
