Wilpena Pound is not an extinct volcano or meteorite crater, but the result of extreme folding of two ancient mountain ranges. The natural amphitheatre extends over more than 10 by 5 km, with the highest point of the rim 1170 m above sea level. You enter the pound through Wilpena Valley, reaching an old farm house after about 1 hour from the ranger station. A trail leads to a good viewpoint above Wilpena Valley.
Above a composed panorama of the inside of Wilpena Pound taken from that point, below a full panorama from the outside. The best, but quite expensive way to discover the Pound would be by plane, but it is still awesome from the ground! It was once settled by a farmer family; they had to give up, though, after the road through the valley was destroyed by a flood. Today it is protected within the Flinders Range National Park.
